DAY 9 ASTI & PALAZZO MAZZETTI OVERNIGHT IN MONTELUPO ALBESE Asti is world-famous for its spumante but this historic town has more to offer than just sparkling wine. Frommer's describes Asti's Old Town as "history-drenched." Inhabited since the Neolithic period (4,500 to 2,000 BC), Asti was settled by the Romans as a military camp in 124 BC, Asti grew to become an important city of the Augustan period. Asti was one of the most powerful city-republics of northern Italy during the Middle Ages.   We visit Palazzo Mazzetti, home to a family of noble origins, who grew rich thanks to their own minting rights and shrewd property purchases. Considered the most stately and beautiful 18th-century mansion in Asti, Palazzo Mazzetti houses the city-owned art collection. Among the most illustrious guests to the home on Corso Alfieri have been King Charles Emmanuel III of Sardinia (1727) and Napoleon Bonaparte (1805).   D.
