The Caffé Torino on Piazza San Carlo and the Porticoes of the 17th-Century Square
It is said that the political life of Turin has always revolved around the cafés of Piazza San Carlo.
The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche lived at Via Carlo Alberto 6.
The Caffè San Carlo and Il Neuv Caval'd'Brons are also on the square.

The 17th-century Palazzo Reale or Royal Palace of Turin was the residence of members of the House of Savoy, who ruled as Dukes of Savoy, Kings of Sardinia, and Kings of Italy. The palace is sumptuously decorated in the style befitting such an illustrious family, descendents from Humbert I, Count of Sabaudia, of the 11th century.
The Palazzo Reale displays the talents of the most important artists working in Turin over three centuries. Precious furnishings, ceilings in inlaid wood, and boiseries characterize the salons. The palace is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The Shroud of Turin

Adjacent to the Royal Palace is Turin Cathedral (Duomo di Torino), dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Inside is the Chapel of the Holy Shroud, the current resting place of the Shroud of Turin, a linen cloth bearing the image of a man who appears to have suffered physical trauma in a manner consistent with crucifixion. The image on the shroud is commonly associated with Jesus Christ, his crucifixion and burial. The shroud has been described as "one of the most studied and controversial artifacts in human history."

Porticoes along the main shopping streets near the Royal Palace served to protect the king and his court from downpours while traveling between palaces. There are now some 10 miles of porticoes in Turin, which make shopping and strolling convenient in any weather.
