CASTELLO GRINZANE CAVOUR & WINE TASTING
OVERNIGHT IN MONTELUPO ALBESE
The Langhe (Langa in Italian) derives its name from a local word for hill. This wine growing region south of Alba is little known in the United States. It is characterized by rolling hills, vineyards and winding roads, with
breathtaking views around every bend. It is a magnificent, poetic landscape.
Grinzane Cavour Castle stands in one of the most spectacular settings in the Langa. The imposing building dates back to the first half of the 11th century. The Castle once belonged to Count Camillo Benso
of Cavour, one of the architects of the Unification of Italy. He lived here from 1832 to 1849, when he was Mayor of the village of Grinzane.
The Castle now houses the “Cavour” Regional Enoteca, the first to be set up in Piedmont in 1967. This is a prestigious showcase for the very best Piedmontese wines and grappas, foremost amongst them being
Barolo and Barbaresco. The wines undergo a strict selection process before being displayed and placed on sale along with leading local food products.
The village of Murazzano in the Alta Langa or High Langhe is unspoiled. The people are friendly and welcoming to visitors. The town is known for the fine and delicately flavored taste of
its Pecora de Murazzano cheese.
Murazzano is the setting in several works by Beppe Fenoglio, a local hero born in Alba and one of Italy's most esteemed writers of the 20th century. Fenoglio wrote of the struggle against fascism and
Nazism during World War II.
