Principality of Liechtenstein. Vaduz is the seat of government

Vaduz Castle, towering on a rock formation above the capital, is the residence of the
reigning Prince of Liechtenstein.
When Prince Johann Adam I of Liechtenstein purchased the County of Vaduz he became the
fifth owner of Vaduz Castle, which was originally built during the 14th century.
As the Princely family at that time was based in Vienna, the castle was used over the years
as barracks, a prison, restaurant and as the seat of administration. During the period 1904
to 1914, the then Reigning Prince John II renovated the castle.
Reigning Prince Franz-Josef II was the first prince to take permanent residence during 1938
in Liechtenstein, when Austria had been annexed by the Nazis.
Heidiland
The Swiss Tourism Board recently declared that the Rhine Valley in the Eastern Canton of
Graubunden should be known as
Heidiland.
The Swiss author Johann Spyri spent several summers in the area near the village of
Maienfeld, which was later to provide the geographic
setting for her world-famous novel, Heidi .
Heidi has been translated into about 50 languages and printed in an
equivalent number of millions of copies. The story of the loveable, humorous,
and completely natural Heidi has appeared in print, in film, and
on television all over the world. She has maintained her character despite
the changing tides of literary trends.
The spectacular mountain scenery around Maienfeld which attracted the Swiss author has also
remained unspoiled.
We will visit Heidihaus (Heidi's house) in Heidi's Village (Heididorf)
near Maienfeld.

Naudersberg Castle stands proudly above Nauders. This well preserved castle dates
from the 13th century. From the very outset, it was the seat of a court serving the
Nauders/Graun/St.Valentin - Unterengadin - Oberpaznaun (Galtür, Ischgl) region.
The original structure consisted of the main residential tract to the south and the
lower keep. The castle was expanded in the 16th century with the addition of a number of
defensive features (roundtowers, keep walls, gateway with machicoulis, as well as a
public prison). Today it is a museum, open to visitors.
