Day-by-Day Itinerary - Part 3

DAY 6 / TUESDAY / JUNE 2
KRIMML FALLS
OVERNIGHT IN KRIMML
We again take the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and return to to Salzburgerland. Passing through Mittersill, we see high above the town its famous castle, Schloss Mittersill.

Krimml Falls is Europe's highest waterfall and the fifth in the world. The Krimmler Ache flows through a narrow wooded valley, then plunges 380 meters (1250 feet) in three tremendous steps. Its flow in summer is 57,000 liters per second. Facing the falls is the village of Krimml, majestically situated at 3530 feet, high above the Salzach River.
On the main street through Krimml is a statue of Anton Wallner, Austrian freedom fighter in the 1809 battle against Napoleon and the Bavarians.

DAY 7 / WEDNESDAY / JUNE 3
INNSBRUCK, CAPITAL OF THE TYROL
OVERNIGHT IN EHRWALD
Innsbruck, capital of the Habsburg Empire under Maximilian I, is today the capital of Tirol, one of Austria's nine provinces.
The Tyrol is 4,883 square miles, about the size of the state of Connecticut, with a population of about 600,000. Innsbruck is a comfortable city of about 125,000.
Mountain peaks surround Innsbruck and the views are spectacular from almost any spot in the city.
Innsbruck preserves its medieval core, the historic Old Town with narrow, irregular streets.
The Goldenes Dachl (Little Golden Roof) is the city's landmark, built in 1500.
Don't miss the Hofkirche, with its 28 larger-than-life bronze statues, called "The Black Men," and the tomb of the Tyrol's most famous patriot, Andreas Hofer .

Tribute to Andreas Hofer

Berg Isel is the site of the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympic games -- and the scene of three famous battles fought during the struggle for Tyrolean independence from Bavaria in 1809.
The giant statue of Andreas Hofer proclaims his fight for "Gott, Kaiser und Vaterland."
Innsbruck is a good place to buy lederhosen or a dirndl to wear on the rest of the tour to put yourself in an alpine mood.
The traditional village of Ehrwald, population 3,000, offers unique old-style Tyrolean charm hard to find in this modern fast-paced age.
Erhwald sits near the base of the Zugspitze, the highest peak in Germany at 9,715 feet.
The village is on a beautiful plateau 3,500 feet above sea level, in a peaceful valley selected by National Geographic magazine as one of the most scenic and beautiful spots on Earth.
